Microsoft BizSpark

Microsoft just recently released a program call BizSpark. The program is oriented to companies that are starting their own software product development or “service that will form a core piece of its current or intended business”. So if you are hosting company, web shop or outsourcing company – this one is not for you.

I find this program amazing since it gives access to many MS product which otherwise are just not possible to get if you are small startup company. What is also great is that the program is free to join, yes, FREE, and there is $100 exit fee which is just absolutely nothing for what you get.

Except the business orientation requirement, in order to be eligible you need also the following:

  • Privately held
  • In business for less than 3 years
  • Less than US $1 million in annual revenue

And finally here is the list of all the benefits that you get:

Design, development, testing and demonstrations rights with regard to:

  • All the software included in the Visual Studio Team System Team Suite (VSTS) with MSDN Premium subscription
  • Expression Studio (Version 2)
  • VSTS Team Foundation Server (Standard Edition)

Production Use rights to host a “software as a service” solution (developed by the startup during their participation, on any platform) over the Internet, with regard to products including: Windows Server (all versions up to and including Enterprise); SQL Server (all versions); Office SharePoint Server; Systems Center, and BizTalk Server

This is actually the first time Microsoft is giving TFS Standard Edition almost for free (Workgroup edition included in MSDN Premium is for use of max 5 people). A good sign to the development world.

MVP Award 2008 Renew

I got awarded for the third time with the MVP Award. The award is presented on an annual basis which makes it even harder to keep up in the years. Still Microsoft does not stop releasing new products and CTPs so one can easily lose many days and nights working with their products. Becoming an MVP is great and has a lot of benefits. My category is VSTS which gives me access to a number of great people that are eager to discuss and share their knowledge in VS and VSTS. If you want to become one, you have to keep one thing in mind: community work! You should be ready to spend a lot of your time helping online and local communities without getting paid for this. Believe me this could mean having weeks of few hours sleep per day. Or just leaving your daily job and concentrate on this :)

Scott Hanselman is joining Microsoft

Scot Hanselman is joining Microsoft as Program Manager at the Developer Division. He will be mostly responsible for getting in touch with developer community and talking about .NET 3.5 and later, as well as WPF, Silverlight, CLR, DLR, IIS and more. It is good that Microsoft managed to get him on board, still it is bad that the community lost another one independent MS supporter :)

Enough of NASD

Recent changes in my life affected my blog posts rate but I will try to keep up in the next weeks.

The news is that I am no longer associated with the National Academy for Software Development. I really tried to make everything I could to make it work, but I only find complete misunderstanding from my partners. From this time and after I am not behind and do not support any activities of the Academy.

Looking in the future I can only say that many exciting things are just on their way. I will keep you informed.

PI day

Today is the PI day and it is also the birthday of Albert Einstein. Happy birthday, Albert :)
If by any chance you haven’t watched the movie PI, I definitely recommend it.
